Zappa-style Dynamic Phasing and Flanging
Keeley bubble
Zappa fan? So are many of the guitarists here at Sweetwater. And so is pedal-design guru Robert Keeley. The Keeley Bubble Tron delves into some of the signal manipulation techniques that helped make Frank Zappa such a distinctive lead guitarist. A flanger/phaser that dynamically responds to your pick attack, cycling only as you play, the Bubble Tron features a Random Stepped Filter with proprietary M-Style Synth bandpass shaping. Combine its three modes of operation in uniquely creative ways, and the Keeley Bubble Tron plays like an extension of your fingers – and your brain.
Keeley Bubble Tron at a Glance:
- Dynamic flanging that’s unique to your playing
- Two phasers: standard and DynaPhase
- Vintage synth-style Random Stepped Filter
Dynamic flanging that’s unique to your playing
From the late 1970s through the mid ’80s, Frank Zappa used the infamous MicMix DynaFlanger to forge many of his lead guitar sounds that relied upon envelope-based dynamic flanging. The effect starts and stops based on your pick attack, effectively creating an “envelope” that can be used to modulate another part of the circuit. Compare the Bubble Tron against any garden-variety flanger that simply cycles endlessly, and you’ll agree that dynamic flanging creates an effect that’s completely unique to your playing – and infinitely more engaging for your fans. In addition, the Bubble Tron offers a choice of either positive or negative feedback via its FDBK control, allowing you to customize your sound even further.
Two phasers: standard and DynaPhase
Lift the hood of the Bubble Tron’s DynaMoPhase section, and you’ll find two phasers. A standard phaser sports an LFO with a Rate Control that sets its speed. Depth is controlled dynamically. The other phaser is a true Dynamic Phaser that starts and stops according to your pick attack. Simply set the Depth and Sensitivity for a superbly watery phase effect based entirely on your guitar’s signal. To run Bubble Tron full DynaPhase, kill the standard phaser by turning its Rate Control off.
Vintage synth-style Random Stepped Filter
The Bubble Tron’s Filter Section is the only effect onboard that isn’t dynamic. Deploy the Filter to control effect ramping, and explore degrees of randomness with the Shape Control. The Sensitivity Control is designed to act like a vintage synth-style bandpass filter, and with it you can elicit some fairly marvelous keyboard-like sounds. If you’re a lead guitarist into sonic experimentation, you’ll appreciate how powerful a tool the Keeley Bubble Tron is for forging your signature guitar sounds.
