Schlagwerk: Art Of Percussion Featuring Scott Rodricks

Scott Rodricks is a vocalist and acoustic guitarist known for his inventive approach to music. He crafts unique sounds by using live loops and the body of his guitar to create distinctive beats and percussions.
Scott’s journey began in Goa, where he honed his craft as a lead singer in three bands. Today, as a solo artist, he is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of his music and exploring new creative techniques as an experimental guitarist.

Let’s hear from Scott about what inspired him to incorporate the Schlagwerk SamJam into his setup.

Q. What sparked your interest in integrating the SamJam – The Guitar Snare into your setup?

Scott: It had been about two years of using the guitar body for looping percussion, and the SamJam proved to be the perfect choice for achieving a crisp snare sound.

Q. How has SamJam transformed your guitar’s role in your music?

Scott: SamJam helped me get authentic percussive elements into my Live Loops which transformed the quality of my performance.

Q. The SnareBuzzControl magnet is designed to customise the snare sound. How have you adjusted this feature to suit your playing style?

Scott: The SnareBuzzControl magnet can be used in two ways: first, to adjust the snare’s pitch up or down, and second, to manage the buzz from strumming that results from frequency clashes. In my case, however, there is a sweet spot with the magnet that effectively addresses both issues.

Q. Has the SamJam sparked any new approaches or techniques in your guitar playing?

Scott: The SamJam helps you break traditional boundaries in guitar playing by enabling you to use the body of your instrument creatively. It transforms your approach, allowing you to view the guitar not just as a stringed instrument but also as a percussive tool.

Q. Considering the adhesive material made from natural raw materials, how easy was it for you to install the SamJam on your guitar? Did you find the removal process straightforward as well?

Scott: The adhesive is like a blue tack material. But unlike blue tack, it doesn’t stick too hard to the body of the guitar and leaves residue. It holds the SamJam with the right amount of strength and doesn’t fall off even during humid weather. When removing it comes off easily without resistance.

Q. What aspects of the SamJam’s design and build quality impressed you the most? How do these premium components contribute

Scott: The design is exceptionally convenient. Its compact size allows it to be placed anywhere without interfering with your playing. Made from high-grade wood, it has an exclusive feel and, in addition to its functionality, enhances the aesthetic appeal of your instrument, drawing attention from onlookers.

Q. For musicians considering the SamJam, what advice would you give based on maximising its potential in different musical contexts?

Scott: It’s the ideal tool for an acoustic guitarist who wants to incorporate beats and percussive elements into their music. I highly recommend it to any guitar player, even outside of a professional setting. While jamming for fun, it can spark a range of creative ideas and uses.

Q. Looking ahead, how do you envision incorporating the SamJam into your future compositions or collaborations? What new possibilities does it open up for your music?

Scott: My entire act as a musician revolves around Live Loops, utilizing various guitar sounds, and in recent months, the SamJam has become a crucial part of that. It has transformed my identity as a guitar player, turning me into an amateur percussionist as well. This fusion of acoustic elements is central to my music composition. There’s something inherently appealing about playing unplugged for me. For me, the SamJam offers the possibility of performing solo while still creating the impression of having a full accompaniment. It’s the perfect accessory and companion for an acoustic guitar.
